CPEL Conference 2016

The CPEL conference for 2016 took place on 8 July at the Metropole Hotel in Llandrindod Wells. The theme of the conference was ‘Evidence based-practice and practice based-evidence: towards a national programme of social work excellence.’

The previous year’s CPEL conference ‘Marking the Start’ was a great success so this year we decided to present the CPEL Post-Consolidation and Consolidation Programmes from across Wales together.

Education in social work is to do with knowing why we do what we do. The CPEL programmes are about extending the notion of building the evidence-base throughout the careers of social workers. The theme of this year’s CPEL conference bore this out.

To create a comprehensive view of this years theme we had speakers from the Association of Directors of Social Services as well as several presenters on different approaches to the notion of evidence base, including Professor Donald Forrester (whose work was influential in initiating the Integrated Family Support Team initiative across Wales) and Professor Fiona Verity (whose forthcoming plans for the School for Social Care Research are expected to have a major influence in the field).

Importantly, for the first time the link was publicly established between new work around research and the CPEL programme. The establishing of the Exchange network and the emerging work and research capacity building of the SSCR was highlighted.

On order to maintain the pragmatic focus which had been so well-received last year we continued with sessions from:

  • The Consolidation Programmes
  • CPEL (Experienced, Senior and Consultant programmes) – discussions from prospective students
  • Impact – what are the outcomes for students (including Action Research findings)

The result was a highly successful day where the achievements of the CPEL programmes were made clear; that the links between research and good practice are growing and these factors are continuing to provide developments in the social work field that can only be of benefit to those who come to use the services concerned.

CPEL Conference 2015

The CPEL Consolidation programmes hold an annual conference, in partnership with the Care Council for Wales (now Social Care Wales), which provide an opportunity for all stakeholders to meet, share successes around CPEL and inform development of the programme going forward.

The first of these events, entitled ‘Marking the Start’ was held on Wednesday 3rd of June 2015 at The Metropole, Llandrindod Wells. The aims of the day were to

  1. Mark the start of this innovative and ambitious phase of the CPEL process.
  2. Give an overview of the progress made to date.
  3. Identify some specific practice based outcomes, drawing on student work to date.
  4. Discuss with stakeholders the next steps in the programmes development.
